About

When you think about life, you realize that we all struggle at times to keep afloat. Actually, it’s very much like paddling a canoe. Although it looks easy, we know that it takes a lot of energy and hard work to move us in the direction that we want to go. At times, we encounter storms and go off course and often feel unprepared for what’s ahead. Being a young person or an adult today is sometimes comparable to being in a canoe without a paddle. People often feel hopeless and are filled with worries about all of the uncertainties they face.

With the rising number of adolescents and teens using smart phones today, research is now showing a link between frequent screen use (social media) and teenage depression and anxiety. It has created an addiction that society is just recognizing now.

For the past 30 years, I have worked in education in Peel and York District Boards of Education as a classroom teacher, a Special Education teacher and, for the past 14 years, as a middle school Guidance Counsellor, helping students navigate their own passage through all of the challenges of life. Being part of a school that included the International Baccalaureate (IB) program made me much more aware of the stress young people feel trying to achieve academic excellence or meet expectations while navigating the waters of regional programs and the anxiety associated with them.

Children with various abilities from all schools and all programs often struggle with their own storms in life. Whether they are grieving the death of a loved one, or experiencing peer challenges, bullying or trauma, they need someone to grab a paddle and come on board to give them the help they need. Many years of experience and a warm and caring environment allow me to steer them in the right direction. Throughout the years, I have also counselled parents and staff regarding their own storms in life.

If you are a child, teen, adult or parent who is struggling with choppy waters and needs some help, then I encourage you to contact me. You are not alone. Together, we can work on making your canoe ride smooth and strong and help you reach your final destination.
